Exploring imaging radar and regrowth detection in Queensland's woodlands
Presenter: Jason Dail, Young Geographers Special Interest Group
Jason Dail is a PhD candidate at the University of Queensland and RGSQ Young Geographer. His PhD research focuses on using synthetic aperture radar for improving clearing and regrowth detection in Queensland's woodlands. Woodlands are the dominant forest type in Queensland (close to 80%) and provide a challenge to accurately map clearing and regrowth due to their sparse distribution. Accurate clearing and regrowth data is important for not only regional and state vegetation policies, but also for international agreements such as the Paris Agreement, the Sustainable Development Goals, and the new EU deforestation regulation. Jason will present a brief introduction to imaging radar as well as some preliminary results from his research.
