ROMA STREET PARKLAND 19th MARCH 2025

This morning visit to Roma Street Parkland will not only provide a guided walk around the gardens but will feature a presentation by the distinguished Landscape Architect, Lawrie Smith AM. He was the original designer of the Parkland and has been heavily involved in the design of many Botanic Gardens as well as the gardens and flowers for Expo 88.

Time: Meet at The Garden Cafe at 10am. Morning Tea can be taken at leisure before 10am, but no formal booking will be made.

Access to the Parkland: There is a public car park off College Road costing $4.05/hr at a maximum of $16/day. Payment by CelloPark app or by ticket machine, that only allows 4 hours parking. Note that there is no right-hand turn approaching from the Normanby Fiveways.

The parkland is well serviced by public transport. The entrance to the Parkland from Roma Street is opposite Makerston Street. You pass through the Roma Street Train Station, including two barriers. They will let you through these barriers without payment. From the railway station follow signs to Roma St Parkland by proceeding up the escalator or lift to the Brisbane Coach Terminal. Keep to the right after crossing the road and there is another escalator or lift up to the Parklands. Turn left and the Garden Café is on the left.

Access is also available from Wickham Terrace, and a walk from the Albert Street entrance near Wickham Park.

Presentation: Lawrie will cover the creation of the parkland, the issues confronted, the final design and future plans. He will be joined by Jennifer Schulz who is an experienced guide.

Walk: We will then be taken for a walk by Lawrie and Jennifer and will visit in detail most of the aspects of the Parkland and Botanic Gardens covered in his talk.

Lunch: This has been booked for 1pm at the Garden Café at your own cost. We will choose from the menus beforehand to help the logistics and the Garden Café staff. There is no formal programme after lunch.

Participants please note: This event will involve a substantial walk around the Parkland, with some slopes and steps. Wear appropriate shoes and clothing, use suntan lotion and bring a hat, camera and water. There are plenty of water fountains throughout the park.

This event will still proceed in the event of rain, unless it is very heavy.

Cost: Members $8 and Non-members $18. Note: The presenters are volunteers, but we hope they can join us for lunch.

Limit 20 Participants. This cannot be exceeded. Please enrol online. A wait list will be available when the trip is fully booked. If there is sufficient extra interest, we could consider organising a repeat if the presenters are willing and able, with priority being given to those on the waitlist.
