Young Geographers

Aerial map of the Roma Street Parklands with a marker on the BBQ area and text that reads "Welcome Picnic & BBQ" with the event detailsJoin the RGSQ Young Geographers as we welcome in 2025 with a BBQ picnic in the beautiful Roma Street Parklands. We'll meet at the Lakeside BBQ area from 5:30pm and be cooking up a treat with a free sausage sizzle and some drinks. Some vegan and gluten free options will be provided, please let us know via email if you have additional dietary considerations. Feel free to bring along some extra snacks to share if you wish.

Come meet our existing group members and coordinators, catch up with peers you haven't seen in a while and make new friends in Brisbane! The Young Geographers group is a community for geography-loving students and early to mid-career professionals, as well as those who are young at heart. All are welcome. We're looking forward to meeting you!

This year we're also starting up a new initiative of 'table topic' discussions for those who are interested in broadening their intellectual horizons, getting engaged with current events and ideas in geographic literature and discussing those ideas with others. These discussions will seek to engage community members in informal dialogue on geography topics that are of relevance to our society. There's no pressure to get involved if you'd rather just hang out and enjoy some casual conversation, but for those who like a bit of organised fun keep reading for this month's discussion topic.

Table Topic Discussions: LA Bushfires and Bushfire Risk in Australia

For our first table topic, we are aiming to discuss the recent bushfires in LA in relation to bushfire risk for major cities in Australia and possible implications for tourism, including the upcoming 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brisbane. As such, we have identified the following articles that we would encourage attendees to read ahead of our discussion session:

We encourage you to think of the following questions when reading the articles:

  • What causes bushfires and how are the fires projected to change in the future?
  • How are bushfires characteristics influenced by human activities?
  • How do fires impact people's livelihoods and stability as sectors like tourism among others get impacted?
  • What can be done to mitigate bushfire risks and preserve broader economic interests, especially in light of the upcoming Olympics games? What is the role of the community in bushfire mitigation.

Please note that photography will take place at this event for promotional and archival purposes and these photographs may be used on our website and social media. If you would prefer not to be photographed please let the event photographer know. If you have any questions about this event please email the RGSQ office at info@rgsq.org.au.
